Abstract

This paper will analyse the performative aspect with which Gilles Deleuze characterizes the philosophical quest based on À la recherche du temps perdu. For Deleuze, Proust’s narrative bears a certain resemblance to the philosophical endeavour (the creation of concepts), that is observable only through an exhaustive and revisited interpretive engagement with the work. This task encompasses the entirety of the Proust’s Proust and Signs, a text that will be of crucial importance for the philosopher’s conceptual development for more than ten years. In sum, the main hypothesis upheld is that Deleuze immerses himself in the Recherche to initiate the exercise of his own thought and learn what the signs must teach him; thus, after each revisit to the literary work, new horizons of his thought open up.
