This article discusses Machiavelli’s influence on post-Marxist thought in the second half of the 20th century. Building from a conflict theory interpretation of the Florentine writer’s work, the text traces the Machiavellian imprint on the political theory of Claude Lefort and Chantal Mouffe. Through a critical analysis of the main works of these authors, it is argued that their conceptions of politics, democracy, and agonism were influenced by their reading of The Prince and the Discourses on the First Ten Books of Livy. Finally, the text suggests that this link between Machiavelli and post-Marxism, based on the centrality of social conflict, is useful for reflecting on contemporary phenomena such as populism.
