Abstract

This research analyzes the fantastic, dreamlike, and parodic elements in the films of the Coen brothers from a postmodern perspective, elements often undervalued by scholars of their filmography. Using a critical and interpretive analysis, it can be concluded that fantastical references are present from the very beginning of their filmmaking, through different forms of representation, and remain a constant in their work. This is achieved through a visual style and mise-en-scène that employs the fantastic and the dreamlike to alter and distort the classical cinematic narrative paradigm and reality itself, against which the protagonist, like the viewer, is often shown to be powerless and bewildered.
