La doctora Mercedes Zavala es una distinguida investigadora, reconocida internacionalmente, especialista en el estudio de la literatura de tradición oral. A lo largo de su carrera, ha sostenido cientos de entrevistas a narradores, narradoras, cantores y cantoras orales, a los que hay que sumar los que han hecho sus estudiantes en las salidas de campo realizadas bajo su supervisión, y en las tesis que ha dirigido en El Colegio de San Luis, institución en la que se desempeña desde 2006.
Su gran labor en campo la coloca no sólo como investigadora, sino como conocedora de los contextos en los que la literatura de tradición oral se produce, se recrea y se transmite. En ese sentido, el conocimiento generado por Zavala es fundamental para entender lo que sucede con el problema que planteamos: ¿existen límites entre los géneros de literatura de tradición oral? Sí es así, ¿hasta dónde llegan? ¿Cómo pueden ser definidos? De ahí la importancia de entrevistarla para el presente dossier.
