Este artículo describe e interpreta la presencia de la metáfora del cuerpo en La República Original , de Jerónimo Merola (1587). Teniendo en consideración las constantes históricas en el uso metafórico del cuerpo como dispositivo de legitimación del poder, analiza el significado político que adquiere el tópico en este autor; asimismo, cómo utiliza la obra como defensa de la profesión médica y cierta prerrogativa de los médicos para gobernar. El trabajo pone de relieve las fuentes clásicas de inspiración del autor y valora la oportunidad política del discurso científico que subyace a la formulación.
