La impronta puritana en el concepto de pobreza de John Locke

En el presente trabajo me propongo mostrar cómo ciertos aspectos de la moral puritana –una serie de actitudes frente al trabajo, el ocio, la propiedad y el afán de lucro, que Max Weber y otros autores destacaron como preparatorias en relación al surgimiento del capitalismo– subyacen al abordaje que hace Locke de la pobreza. Como intentaré poner de relieve, para Locke la pobreza era, ante todo, un signo de corrupción moral. Locke consideraba que los indigentes eran responsables de su situación y que, por tanto, (re)educarlos era indispensable para hacer frente al problema de la pobreza. De allí que el método principal que propone para paliarla sea el cultivo de las virtudes del trabajo, la abnegación y la moderación racional del afán adquisitivo.
