El estudio problematiza la convergencia de dos requisitos propietarios sobre la tierra, la posesión y la escritura de titulación, en un valle agrícola de Chile durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX. Los residentes, en juicios por derechos sobre la tierra, reinterpretaron el valor jurídico y performativo de ambos requisitos gestionando un instrumento que permitió su coexistencia: los decretos judiciales de puesta en posesión. Estas experiencias contribuyen a las discusiones sobre la apropiación social de los actos de toma de posesión de la tierra y respecto a la formalización de derechos, que concebía estos requisitos propietarios como excluyentes y sucesivos
