Guillermo de la Peña ha producido un amplio corpus de conocimiento en el campo de la antropología social. Su formación de posgrado bajo el cobijo de antropólogos representantes de la reconocida Escuela de Manchester como Max Gluckman, Clyde Mitchell y Bruce Kapferer, entre otros, le permitió consolidar sus posicionamientos teóricos a lo largo de su fructífera carrera intelectual. Su profundo conocimiento de los estudios africanistas que los antropólogos británicos impulsaron en ciudades recién fundadas en diversos países de ese continente durante la primera mitad del siglo xx, le posibilitaron conocer la dinámica de cambio sociocultural de grupos tribales.
